Germany goes through to the round of 16 as group winner

The German national football team is through to the next round after a 1-1 draw against Switzerland. But the equaliser came very late in the game.

Frankfurt/Main (dpa) – The German national football team avoided their first defeat at the European Championships as host nation to secure the top spot in their group. Coach Julian Nagelsmann’s team came from behind to draw 1-1 (0-1) against Switzerland in Frankfurt am Main on Sunday evening, finishing the group round in first place with seven points. In front of a crowd of 47,000, Niclas Füllkrug came off the bench to cancel out Dan Ndoye’s first-half opener in stoppage time.

Germany is now set to play their round of 16 match in Dortmund on Saturday, where they will face England, Denmark, Slovenia or Serbia. Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz was among those watching the match against Switzerland from the stands. Tens of thousands of people cheered the team’s success at  in cities all over Germany. Germany previously beat Scotland 5:1 in their opening game and Hungary 2:0 in their second game in the first round of the competition.

24 teams are competing for the title at.The final is on 14 July at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin. The Euro 2024 matches are being held in ten cities throughout Germany.
